Celebrating Our Country’s Hemp Beginnings on President’s Day
Happy Presidents’ Day!
Presidents’ Day which falls on the third Monday in February originated to recognize our first President’s birthday, George Washington in 1885
which is on February 22nd. It wasn’t until 1971 during the Uniform Monday Holiday Act
that gave more three-day weekends to workers that the holiday was expanded to honor all U.S Presidents past and present. Fun Fact: The Federal government still refers to the holiday as Washington’s Birthday.
We decided to honor the 45 Presidents in United States History with a sale of products that is fitting for some of our Presidents, especially the first one -- a sale of hemp products.
Did you know there are U.S Presidents who grew, used or advocated for the use of Hemp? Although there are have been several rumors, we researched the facts to find the truth.
Presidents known to have grown Hemp:
George Washington: According to Mount Vernon’s official website
, George Washington not only advocated for hemp, but he grew it at Mount Vernon for industrial uses. He recognized the plant was a versatile crop that could be used to make rope, sail canvas, clothing, and repairing fishing nets. Records indicate that Washington considered the crop could be more lucrative than tobacco but ultimately decided wheat was a better investment at the time.
Thomas Jefferson: Thomas Jefferson was an avid horticulturist
and created a breathtaking garden at Monticello
. There he cultivated hundreds of varieties of fruits and vegetables, including hemp
. According to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello website
, “some have pointed to a supposed reference in Jefferson's farm book
to separating male and female hemp plants as evidence that he was cultivating it for purposes of recreational smoking; no such reference exists in Jefferson's farm book or any other document.”
Presidents known to use hemp or cannabis
James Monroe: According to his biographers, he smoked cannabis openly in Paris when he served as an ambassador to France and continued to consume cannabis even when he returned to the U.S.
Andrew Jackson: Known to have smoked marijuana with troops
during the War of 1812.
Zachary Taylor: Also smoked cannabis
with American forces but during the Mexican-American War.
Franklin Pierce: Along with President Taylor, Pierce enjoyed cannabis
with troops during the Mexican-American War and later referred to marijuana as "about the only good thing to come out of the war."
John F. Kennedy: To deal with severe back pain, JFK admitted to smoking marijuana in the White House with Jim Truitt, and Mary Meyer. He was quoted
in John F. Kennedy: A Biography
, which described this White House scene.
Barack Obama: Obama went on record admitting he inhaled
because “that was the point”
There's one President rumored to have used cannabis that we just wanted to highlight. Nothing has ever been substantiated by these claims, but thinking Honest Abe was also using hemp.
Several rumors about Abraham Lincoln and his use of hemp have surfaced throughout the years but none ever have been proven with credible evidence
. A quote that is commonly mistaken being said by Lincoln in 1855 is "Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica."; however, the company Hohner was not founded until 1857
In honor of all these Hemp loving Presidents, we’re having a hemp product sale!
